Brownbread Horse Rescue Charity
Brownbread Horse Rescue Charity, situated in E.Sussex, is at the forefront of preventing abuse and neglect of equines. With over 60 acres of pasture the Charity, (registered 1029341) is able to take in emergency cases and works closely with the WHW and the RSPCA. Most of our voluntary Field Officers are located in the South East however we are now recruiting volunteer officers UK-wide and knowledgeable persons are invited to contact the Centre to apply.
The picture shows one of our recent success stories where we rescued a 7 year old mare that was still suckling a 13 month yearling. The mare had collapsed. On eventually getting the emaciated mare back to the Centre we had to suspend it in a sling for 6 weeks with 24 hour intensive care. We were not able to find any other equine hospital or organisation that had achieved such a prolonged suspension of an equine in a sling. The mare made a full recovery and the ex-owner was found guilty in Hastings Court in February '09, fined £4,500 and banned from keeping equines for 5 years. One of our other large rescues concerned 25 ponies from one breeder who just didn't care that his colts were kept in prison and NEVER let out; (one imprisoned for 12 years!) while mares collapsed in fields emaciated. This man was also fined and banned but decided to appeal. In the Hove Crown Court the judge doubled his fine and banned him for life.
We have a 24/7 helpline where mostly you are able to discuss your concerns with a real live person, me, Tony or Dinty our Head of Welfare. Sadly the WHW and the RSPCA only provide an answerphone out of hours and certainly don't turn out on Bank Holidays or weekends; we will try although even us volunteers have a life and family but we try and put the needy animals first.
We have two Open Days pa with over 1,000 visitors on each day with stalls and many arena and stage events taking place as well as a big dog show. Our "Friends" group numbers about 700 and we produce 3 newsletters annually.
Visitors are welcome by arrangement and we provide Powerpoint presentations locally. We have a Loan and Foster scheme; if you want an equine on loan you will need our registration form and if you have a horse or pony that you wish to put on loan then, again, you will need to ask for a registration form.
